With its Esprit E 136 Helix shows that high-class equipment doesn’t need to be expensive
The component system Helix Esprit E 136 (170 euros) already has a successful relative: The
similarly designed coax-speaker E 106 celebrated its victory in a test review published in autohifi
1/2008. The most striking characteristic of both speakers is the yellow-black checkered cone of
the mid-bass speaker made of a fiberglass meshwork. The basket and its respective rubber
protection self-confidently wear a HELIX logo.
The broad rubber surround suggests high level abilities, and, in fact, the chassis demonstrated
these abilities in our lab. With 104 dB at 90 Hz and even more than 97 dB at 50 Hz HELIX
establishes the record and leads the field in terms of level with 16 points.
The high-quality 25 millimeter silk dome brings along a mounting set which allows four different
installation positions. In all these positions it is embedded pivotably.
The appeal of the crossover lies in its first-class assembly: Solely foil capacitors and air-core coils
form the two 12-dB filters – even concerning the low pass. A light bulb transforms the surplus of
energy into heat and light. In doing so, the tweeter is being protected. Three level taps are the
norm.
Due to the fact that the system is designed for an angle installation, a centered installation made
voices sound a little bit superficial. With an angle installation they were slightly biased. However,
